Passion. Sweat. Hunger. Intensity. Jared Lonergan bares his soul’s quest for eternal fulfillment to achieve ultimate joy. Facing rampant roadblocks of turmoil, and heart-wrenching twists, Jared can’t seem to win. But clusters of hunger drive him to seek it all. He chases, scrapes, cries, and silently pulls himself up a never-ending hill toward nothingness. Death, eating disorders, self- and peer-judgment, Christianity...sexual frustration, sexual fascination, sexual consummation... Happiest Misery My Life as a Mormon delivers a powerful and true representation of the visceral components of the Mormon Church. This is not at all a piece of anti-Mormon literature; to the contrary—Jared chronicles his soul’s aching wish to find his true love and the joy promised to him if he follows the precepts of the Gospel. In doing so, he finds that his efforts fall short of the promises made to him by the leaders of his youth. Will he find her, his truest love? Will his soul dramatically fall into the chasm of eternal damnation? Or will he succeed?

Few Mormons have tried as hard as Jared "Longregarn" or "Longrin" or Lonergan to obtain the promises of Mormon prophets, but through his story anyone can appreciate his failure to get them. His monumental failure was his salvation--when he eventually breaks from those same promises. Lonergan's story will shock, dishearten, and inspire you. But it is how he tells his story that is the true triumph. He continually winds you up in his psychosis and never cheats you with anything less than the truth. The book is an engaging, fearless recounting of his drive to serve God which brings him happiest misery. But thank God he transcends it!

This book left me wanting more without having to read any more. The ending is void of a conclusion. So he finally has sex. Big deal. And how this book can be referred to as 'not a piece of anti Mormon literature' is beyond me. Reading this book certainly wouldn't entice me to look further into becoming a Mormon. Quite the opposite actually. Also, he claims it is auto biographical, however I feel a lot has been exaggerated and some of the characters are a conglomeration of several people lumped into one. For instance, I know several people that have taken a Marriage and Family Class at BYU and that scene he plays out with the professor being so perverse would never happen!! It's not happened in the past 25 years, I doubt it happened before that and I'm sure it's not happening now. I guess some people just need to air their dirty laundry even though there is no real point.
I loved how the author grew through his voice and I, as the reader, was brought along with his emotions
Loved this book! So REAL. I am a mental health therapist and I was waiting for Jared to find out he has bi-polar mood disorder. I hope he writes a sequel. Compares to Teri Chaney's Manic.
I loved reading this book, it was just so interesting and the story line seemed to move right along for me. I was always captured by the amount of information I was getting both about the Author and about the struggles one can have with leading a life of trying to find the balance between what I can do and how that correlates with what I believe and am taught that is right.
This is a book that when you pick it up, you cannot put it down. When you have to put it down, it is probably because you might be too much involved in the ups and downs of Jared's emotions and you need a break, as most people do. Anyway, this is how I have felt when i read the book. This is a story of a man who tries to live a very disciplined life in this world full of temptations. What he has paid for that life style is beyond imagination.
Through religious zealotry and a quest to defeat human passion, Jared came to despise everything around him, most of all himself. He gives you a brutally raw look into his tortured mind as he strives (and fails) to achieve a state of perfection. You will be there by his side as complete personal ruin becomes imminent and his life spirals out of control. But the result of such misery is surprising, it leads him to the very path he once feared. In the end this is a story of personal redemption as he learns to finally accept his own quirks and grants himself the grace that was so long denied him in his past.
I could not put the book down. A complex story of incredible heart and stamina, relentless search for truth, brutal honesty, irrepressible brilliance, and godly courage.
